The R word

I’ve been learning the hard way just how important it is to schedule time for rest and recovery. Burnout has been knocking at my door consistently these past few years. And honestly? It’s because I haven’t done the best job of recognising when I need to sit down somewhere and rest. I’ve been living my life like a hamster on a wheel - always on the go, rarely giving myself a moment to just be.

For the longest time, I had this mindset that if I didn’t do it, it wouldn’t get done. So, I’d push myself to the limit, trying to tick off a ridiculous to-do list of 101 tasks every day, with little to no help. But you know what I’ve realised? I cannot do everything. I can’t be all things to all people, all at once, all the time. It’s just not sustainable, and it’s the quickest way to burn out and lose yourself in the process.

Here’s the truth: rest is not a luxury - it’s a necessity. And just like we schedule work meetings, appointments, and everything else under the sun, we’ve got to schedule rest too.

So, I made a promise to myself: 2024 is the last year I let burnout run my life. In 2025, I’m moving differently. Here’s how I’m prioritising rest and keeping my peace intact:

  • Not taking on every commitment – Listen, I’ve accepted that my energy has limits. Saying yes to everything and everyone? That’s a no from me now.

  • Keeping my to-do list short and sweet – Gone are the days of trying to accomplish 25 things in one day. Now, I stick to 3–5 priorities, and I’m finding I actually get more done this way.

  • Listening to my body – When my body says, “Sis, we’re tired,” I listen. I’m learning to pick up on the little signs that it’s time to slow down and take a breather.

  • Saying no to some social events – As an introvert, I know being around too many people for too long drains my energy. I’ve learned to stop feeling guilty about saying no to invites and skipping events when I need to recharge.

  • Focusing on wellness – Eating clean, moving my body, and getting proper sleep? These are my non-negotiables. When I’m consistent with this trifecta, I feel good, I look good, and my mind stays sharp.

  • Taking a day to switch off – I’ve started dedicating one day a week to completely unplug. No work, no people, no obligations—just me, myself, and whatever brings me joy.

  • Spa days are a must – There’s something about a good spa day that resets my whole vibe. Lately, I’ve been loving the Four Seasons Ten Trinity - it’s my happy place.

2025 is all about protecting my energy and living with intention. What about you? What are you doing differently this year? Let’s talk about it!
